Vernon C. “Doss” Fietsam, 86, of New Athens, IL, born March 10, 1928 in New Athens, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL Mr. Fietsam retired after 20 years from New Athens School District #60 as a school bus driver and custodian. He was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie H. (Kaesberg) Fietsam, whom he married on February 19, 1955 in New Athens, and who died on January 1, 2013, his parents; Hugo and Elsie (Darmstatter) Fietsam, 2 brothers; Verlan “Babe” Fietsam and Kenneth Fietsam and 1 sister; Delores Heil.
Vernon is survived by his son; Kim (Denise) Fietsam of New Athens, IL and 2 daughters; Tina (James) Clarke of Tallahassee, FL and Diane Warnecke of New Athens, IL, sister Shirley Schiber of Shiloh, IL, 10 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter and nieces and nephews.
Memorials in Vernon’s honor may be made to St. Agatha School.
Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2015 and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL
Funeral: Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL with Fr. James M. Nall officiating. Interment will be at St. Agatha Catholic Cemetery in New Athens, IL
Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Sorry we missed the opportunity to tell you in person. We did not hear about the news until later.
Susan remembers many smiles & chuckles from Vernon as her bus driver. He was so kind & pleasant. Those moments make a difference in a childs life.
We both remember buying our first home near Beck Center from your parents . We have many enjoyable memories from that home.

ReplyI was very fortunate as a young boy due to having two uncles close to my age, Doss and Babe. They treated me as their younger brother rather than a nephew and it was a tremendous advantage. I will truly miss them both.

I was very fortunate as a young boy due to having two uncles close to my age, Doss and Babe. They treated me as their younger brother rather than a nephew and it was a tremendous advantage. I will truly miss them both.
