Richard Thomas

Richard A. Thomas, 75, of Marissa, IL; born on March 11, 1943 in Lenzburg, IL; passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.

Mr. Thomas honorably served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam.  He was a retired operating engineer. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Athens, IL, a member of the Operating Engineers Local 520. He served for many years as a volunteer fire fighter on the Lenzburg Fire Department. Richard was an avid gardener and enjoyed the outdoors and also liked deer hunting.

He was preceded in death by his father – Paul Thomas. His mother – Freda, nee Mehner, Thomas. One brother – Charles “Dean” Thomas.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years – Sharon, nee Sommer, Thomas whom he married on December 23, 1967 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. His daughter – Mary (Thad) Rehmer of Lenzburg, IL. His grandson – Matthew Rehmer of Louisville, KY. One brother – James (Donna) Thomas of Belleville, IL. Four sisters – Carol (Leo) Wagner of Lenzburg, IL; Gayle (Arnold) Voelkel of Lenzburg, IL; Beverly Lorenz of Watertown, WI; Marian (Darwin) Brooks of Allen, TX. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or Siteman Cancer Center.

Visitation: Friends may call at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and at St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Athens, IL on Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 9:00am to 11:00am.

Funeral: Services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Athens, IL on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 11:00am with Rev. John Lukomski officiating.

Interment: Burial will be held at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Baldwin, IL.

Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.
