Louie Sommer

Louie C. Sommer, 96, of rural Marissa, IL, born on September 5, 1919 in Baldwin, IL, passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Freeburg Care Center in Freeburg, IL.
Mr. Sommer farmed in Randolph, St. Clair and Monroe Counties in Illinois until his retirement and assisted managing his farm in Missouri. He was a man of steel with a heart of gold.
Mr. Sommer was preceded in death by his parents – Ferdinand and Emilie, nee Luebkemann, Sommer. Three brothers – Ferdinand Sommer, Fred Sommer and Rudolph Sommer. Two sisters – Goldie Bollmeier and Augusta Ohm. Two nephews – Nolan Falkenhein and Wayne Behnken. Four brothers-in-law – Arkell Bollmeier, Leonard Ohm, Carl Behnken, Adolph Falkenhein. A sister-in-law – Helen Sommer. Two nephews-in-law – Richard Dethrow and Martin Wright.
He is survived by six sisters and one brother-in-law – Mathilda Sommer, Emilie Sommer, Frieda Sommer, Lena Behnken, Ella Falkenhein, Leona (Joseph) Braun. Many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his many friends and neighbors he had quite a few canine friends – Jack, Sam, Gus and Gipper to name a few.
Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
Visitation: Friends may call at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, February 18, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Funeral: Services will be held at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Royal Boeder officiating.
Interment: Burial will be held in the Baldwin City Cemetery in Baldwin, IL.
