Loretta M. Hammond

Loretta M. Hammond, nee Kinzinger, 92, of New Athens, IL. passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the New Athens Home for the Aged. Born on October 6, 1928 she lived virtually her entire life in the Township. At age 21, she married another New Athens resident, Wilfred Hammond, with whom she shared the next 61 years. They had two daughters, Charlotte and Donna. Loretta was an active member of St. John United Church of Christ and the St. John Women’s Guild. She was an excellent homemaker especially renowned for her pies, which were often provided for the Guild and Church fund-raisers. She enjoyed growing flowers and playing pinochle with her brothers and sisters in-law. The Annual Homecoming was her favorite local event, in part because she could view the parade from her front porch.
Loretta was preceded in death by her husband – Wilfred Hammond; her daughter – Donna Casperson; her parents – Rolland and Clara, nee Sturm, Kinzinger; two brothers – LaVerne and Norman Kinzinger; two brothers-in-law – Paul Hammond and Ray Probst; and three sisters-in-law – Lela and Vera Kinzinger and Dolores Hammond.
She is survived by her daughter – Charlotte Hammond of Haddam, CT; two sons-in-law – Ivan Shevchenko of Haddam, CT and Jerry Casperson of Wildwood, MO; two brothers – Cletus Kinzinger of New Athens, IL and Ralph Kinzinger of Freeburg, IL; four sisters-in-law – Carol Kinzinger and Ida Probst of New Athens, IL, Gladys Kinzinger of Freeburg, IL, and Barbara Hammond, Smithton, IL; one brother-in-law – Edward Hammond of Caseyville, IL; five grandchildren; Alexis Shevchenko, Christine Shevchenko (Tim Goulet), Julianna Shevchenko, Mallory Casperson (Brett Jones), Lucas Casperson (Jackie), and one great grandchild, Tennyson Jones as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials: St. John United Church of Christ Women’s Guild in New Athens, IL
Visitation: Friends may join the family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday May 13, 2021 at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday May 14, 2021 at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, face masks must be worn at all times while inside the funeral home and the church.
Funeral: Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday May 14, 2021 at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL with Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery in New Athens, IL
Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte I was sad to read that you mom had passed away. My mom and her were friends from gradeschool to now. Mom often told stories of their fun times together. May God wrap his loving arms around you and comfort you.
