Lester E. Hammel, 91, a resident at the Columbia Convalescent Center in Columbia, IL, formerly of New Athens, IL died on April 25, 2013, 2013 due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Mr. Hammel was a retired coal miner. He was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL and a 4th degree Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel E., nee Staufenbiel, Hammel, whom he married on October 21, 1946 in Hecker, IL and who passed away on February 20, 2013. His parents Frank and Amelia, nee Heinecke, Hammel. 1 son – Michael Hammel. 1 grandson Joshua James Hammel. 2 brother – Arthur (Lavone) Hammel; Harold (Elenor) Hammel. 3 sisters – Mildred (Rudolph) Schmidt; Frances (Adolph) Rieckenberg; Margaret Hammel.
Surviving are his 5 children; Peg Sher of St. Louis, MO, Tom (Linda) Hammel of Millstadt, IL, Jim (Pam) Hammel of Waterloo, IL Tina (Jim) Brannon of Coeur d’Alene, ID and Dan (Sheri) Hammel of Waterloo, IL. 9 grandchildren; Michael (Christy) Hammel, Nicole (Dave) Zanghi, Kim (Vince) Ratchford, Adam Bruno, Katie Hammel, Steven (Makayla) Bonney, Kevin Bonney, Jeff Duco and Jay Duco; and 7 gr. grandchildren; Brittney and Courtney Hammel, Luke Russel, Will Ratchford, Alyssa and Lauren Zanghi and Jon Duco.
Memorials may be made to St. Agatha Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2013 and again on Monday, April 29, 2013 from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL. A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. A Knights of Columbus 4th Degree ritual will follow at 4:30 p.m.
Funeral: A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013 at St. Agatha Catholic Church with Fr. James M. Nall officiating
Interment: Burial will be at St. Agatha Catholic Cemetery in New Athens, IL.
