Katherine Napier

Katherine M. Napier, nee Scheibe, 95, of New Athens, IL; born on August 13, 1921 in Valmeyer, IL; passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the New Athens Home for the Aged in New Athens, IL.

Mrs. Napier was a homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cleaned house for several ladies in New Athens. She worked at Fairway Department Store in New Athens and was also a kitchen worker for many years at the New Athens Home for the Aged. Katherine enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to cook, quilt, play cards and dominoes. Katherine liked to dance, camp and go trout fishing. Her other favorite projects included making rag rugs on her loom and making cut-out patterns on sweatshirts, many of which she sold at various craft fairs. She was often requested to cook her specialties which were coffee cake, jelly rolls, pineapple upside down cake, cream puffs, chocolate angel food cake and chicken and dumplings.

She was preceded in death by her parents – Max and Katie, nee Brandt, Scheibe. Her husband Bernard J. Napier whom she married on December 17, 1938 in Maeystown, IL and who passed away on October 3, 1987. Also preceded by three sisters – Bertha Gilbert Ripplemeyer; Tillie Engel; Ardell Reid. Four brothers – Alvin Scheibe, Walter Scheibe; Max Scheibe; Fred Scheibe. One son-in-law – George “Mike” Meketa.

She is survived by her children – Eugene “Shorty” (Jeanette) Napier of New Athens, IL; Glenn (Marilyn) Napier of Baldwin, IL; Richard Napier of Frankford, MO; Shirley Ziebold of Red Bud, IL; Barbara Meketa of New Athens, IL. Nine grandchildren – Brian Napier; Brenda King; Lori (Mike) Blackburn; Linda (David) Bartlett; Sherry (Carl Pohl) Ziebold; Bill (Julie) Ziebold; Marc (Allison) Ziebold; Dustin (Ellie Rush) Ziebold; Brian (Katie Crockett) Meketa. Thirteen great-grandchildren – Megan Blackburn; Michaela Blackburn; Cody Blackburn; Nicholas Bottom; Alyssa Bottom; Madison King; McKenzie King; Taylor Ziebold; Jordin Ziebold; Griffin Ziebold; Katie Ziebold; Manny Noethen; Issac Meketa. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the New Athens Home for the Aged or to the family.

Visitation: Friends may call at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 9:00am to 10:00am.

Funeral: Services will be held at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 10:00am with Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating.

Interment: Burial will be held at Oakridge Cemetery in New Athens, IL.
Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.

    I was Katherines neighbor for awhile, and will always know her that way, and such a good neighbor and her family also. I knew her and her rugs she made long before she was my neighbor, we did live in the same part of town and I had many of those beautiful rugs. The picture of her is perfect, just Katherine.
