John “Art” Bergfeld, Sr.

John "Art" Bergfeld, Sr.

John Arthur “Art” Bergfeld Sr., 91, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Sparta Community Hospital, Sparta, Il, surrounded by his family.  Born September 7, 1932, in Percy, IL, to Arnold and Nellie (McIntyre) Bergfeld. He married Madeline Appel at Bethel RP Church in Sparta on July 7, 1955, by R.W. Stewart. They were married 69 years!

Art graduated from Sparta High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He loved his country and serving it!  Art was a heavy equipment operator for two coal mines: Streamline Mine and Consolidated Coal-Burning Star #4. He also farmed on the side.  Saved and baptized as a young teenager, Art was a faithful follower of Christ, and served in his church in numerous ways as elder, deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, as well as a part of the Building Committee.  Art led a simple, quiet life with a character that was reflective of a man whose life had been changed by his relationship with Christ. This left a life-changing example for not just his family, but for all that knew him.  On any given day, you might find Art riding Harley Davidson motorcycles for fun with his kids and grandkids or restoring antique cars. In the evening, you might find him sharing a pint of DQ ice cream with a grandkid and watching movies into the wee hours of the morning or taking a truck ride at dusk with Madeline to see how many deer they could spot.

Art is survived by one son, John A. Bergfeld Jr. (Sharon) of Carbondale, IL, and one daughter, Brenda Ogilvie (Tim) of Jackson, MO; six grandchildren Breanna Kiefer (Justin), Lauren Pilcher (Aaron), Evan Bergfeld (Elizabeth), Jessica Bergfeld, Tarik Ogilvie, and Trenton Ogilvie; plus, six great grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Heil-Schuessler & Sinn Funeral Homes in Sparta for the Bergfeld Family to donate as they designate at a later date.

Heil-Schuessler & Sinn Funeral Home in Sparta, IL is in charge of arrangements
