Mrs. Joann “Becky” Hyche Monteith passed away peacefully on Thursday, the 25th of March 2021 at her daughter’s home in Sparta, Illinois. She was 85 years of age. Born on the 11th of May 1935 in Walker County, Alabama, Mrs. Monteith was the daughter of Henry and Gladys Hyche.

She was a graduate of Cordova High School and was a member of Hillview Baptist Church in Forestdale. Affectionately known as “Miss Becky” to her students, she taught kindergarten for 11 years at Hillview Baptist Church. Mrs. Monteith found deep joy in her relationships with young children, particularly infants and toddlers in her circle of family and friends. Her home was always a welcoming place, where she enjoyed hosting large family gatherings and preparing Southern delicacies to eat. She was an avid gardener of beautiful flowering plants and hearty delicious vegetables.

Mrs. Monteith was preceded in death by her husband, James Luke Monteith and by her daughter, Cheryl Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Peck (Michael); four grandchildren, Brian Montabana (Fiance, Cassie), Tyler Peck (Tricia), Nicole Peck, and Sarah Schaffner (Tyler); and one great granddaughter, Scarlett Schaffner. She is also survived by her sister, Bobbie Jones, two brothers, Terry Hyche and Jerry Hyche (Harriette), and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family on Thursday, the 1st of April, from Noon until two o’clock in the afternoon at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Immediately following, graveside services will commence at 2:45 p.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama.

The service will be officiated by her son in law, Michael Peck. Memorials honoring the life of Mrs. Monteith may be directed to the March of Dimes by visiting www.marchofdimes.org.

Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road in Homewood.
