Joan Burk

Joan Burk, age 86, of New Athens, IL, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday evening, March 5, 2023. She was born on February 14, 1937, to Harry and Anna Toleta Bradley in Murphysboro, IL.

She met the love of her life on May 28, 1955, in New Athens. The Lord blessed James and Joan with 68 beautiful years of marriage and six children:  Bruce, Elaine, Mark, Sheila, Kathy, and Jane.

Joan loved to garden and planted many flowers throughout the years in her beautiful backyard.  She enjoyed playing games on her IPAD and reading books. One of her favorite prayer books was God’s Word for Growing in Prayer.  She also loved to travel.  Her adventures included France, Germany, Hawaii, and all of the US States.  The last several years she enjoyed being a Snowbird in Destin, FL for the winter.  She was blessed in February 2023 to be able to watch the beautiful sunsets and listen to the ocean for one last time.

Joan was a loving and caring Wife, Mother, and Grandmother.  She loved God and together with her husband Jim ensured their children all knew God.  She took joy in playing and talking with the Grandchildren and the Great Grandchildren whom she adored and loved very much.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Anna Toleta Bradley, Granddaughter Elysia Badgett, Son-In-Law Bob Miller, sisters Mary Lou Stafey, Doris Schneider, Phyllis Jean Bradley, and brothers Clarence, William, Milford, Harry, and Joe (Joan’s Twin) Bradley.

She is survived by her husband James Burk and their six children:  Bruce (Dr Ellen Burk) of Red Bud, Elaine Miller of New Athens, Mark (Rhonda Burk) of Belleville, Sheila (John Barrale) of New Athens, Kathy (Mike Katz), and Jane (Mike Hopkins) of Belleville, two sisters, Janet Bilderback and Annie Tucker, 17 Grandchildren and 30 Great Grandchildren., sister-in-law Arlene Burk and sister and brother-in-law Jake (June) Behnken. She is also survived by special friends, Barry and Dixie Mehner.

Memorials may be made St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday March 11, 2023, at St. Agatha Church.

Service: 12 p.m. on Saturday March 11, 2023, at St. Agatha Church in New Athens, IL with Rev. Von Deeke officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Agatha Catholic Cemetery in New Athens.

Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.
