Jeannette Endres

Jeannette Endres

Jeannette “Jan” Marie Brakhane Endres of Oakdale, Illinois passed away peacefully at Addington Place of Sparta on January 9, 2024.  Jeannette was born October 23, 1941 to Hilbert and Ida Brakhane of Bethalto, Illinois and married Frederick (Fred) Michael Endres on July 7, 1963 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on February 7, 2022.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister (Donna Hellinger), her great nephew (Nick Hellinger), and her cherished pets: Sporty and TomTom.

Jeannette met Frederick while they were both in college at Valparaiso University and they remained staunch supporters of higher education, including Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and St. Louis University, throughout their lifetimes.  Jeannette was an active member of Trinity Saint John Lutheran Church in Nashville, Illinois and St. John Lutheran in Sparta, Illinois during her later life.  She enjoyed being a part of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and the Fellowship Club.  She loved reading, shopping, playing pinochle, drinking a glass of wine with friends, and traveling. Jeannette led an illustrious life!  She retired as a Professor of Food and Nutrition from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where she wrote 22 research articles and was an author/co-author of multiple books including “Food, Nutrition, and the Young Child” and “Community Nutrition: Challenges and Opportunities”.  She continued mentoring and hearing about the successes of her former students throughout her lifetime including Cindy Mense and Margie Sawicki.  Jeannette also worked for NutraSweet helping promote artificial sweeteners and traveled as a spokesperson throughout the country and was an advisor to the Illinois State Board of Education for the healthy school meals initiative.

Jeannette was a Master Gardener and excelled at gardening. She visited multiple exotic locales including Germany, Prague, Turkey, and Egypt.  She enjoyed spending time with her lifelong colleague, friend, and traveling companion Patricia Welch.  Sunday was a highlight of her week as she joined her church family and Lela Asbury in worship at the 10:45 service with the glorious music from the praise band at St. John Lutheran in Sparta.  She looked forward to her visits from Lela, Pastor Miller, and Ellie Bowen.  Jeannette loved talking to and being with people as well as hosting parties in her home during the “busy social season”.

Jeannette’s life was made richer through her love of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She loved her personal care team of Vicki, Sharon, and Kathy.  She was blessed by the staff at Addington Place Senior Living, especially Britton who went above and beyond to help on a regular basis while giving God the glory.  She looked forward to visits from the Vitas Hospice comfort care team including Mallory, Misty, Brittany, Erin, and Royal.

Jeannette is survived by her family including her daughter, Alicia Christina Brakhane Endres Hiller (Ray) of Oakdale, Illinois and her beloved granddaughter, Holleigh Hiller; nephews, Rodney (Beth) and Randy (Stephanie) Hellinger; great niece, Chloe Hellinger; great nephew, Riley Hellinger; cousins and church family.

Just typed her name and read that she had passed on. I am sorry for family/friends. I was in Grad school at SIU in the early 1980’s and remember her well. I became a cardiac intensive care RN and an emergency trauma RN for 26 years. May God bless her.

I met Jan at Valparaiso University in our Biochemistry class. We both loved our professor Dr. Leoschke We both became nutrition majors as he brought biochemistry to life for us. Jan was so super smart and so ambitious that I knew she would excel in nutrition and she did!!

Jan was my closest friend while I was at SIU! She was extremely supportive as I was a young single mom! Denzel and I enjoyed many dinners at her home! She definitely was part of my success story – I’m now a physician and that young child of mine is now 32yrs and a successful graphic designer! Hugs to all mourning her death. She was an awesome woman!
