Gene Lee Werner, 89, of Marissa, IL, died peacefully Friday night on March 16, 2018.
He was born to Gotfried and Alta, nee Vogler, Werner on April 30, 1928 in Marissa, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Cleland Werner and Joanne, nee McGough, Werner, his best friend and wife of 70 years.
He is survived by his children – Jennifer (Wayne) Politsch of Alton, IL; Scott (Dianna McClughn) Werner of Mahomet, IL. One grandson – Aaron Werner of Mahomet, IL.
Gene served in the United States Marine Corp, attended Washington University and worked for Peabody Coal Company as a heavy equipment operator for over 30 years.
Throughout his life he participated in sports including tennis, golf and swimming. He continued to follow high school and college basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals. He excelled in woodworking and carving decoys and birds.
Gene and Joanne enjoyed working together designing and remodeling their homes in Marissa. Gene will be remembered for his caring, loving spirit for family and neighbors – always willing to lend a helping hand.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.
The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside Assisted Living in Godfrey, IL and the BJC Hospice program.
In accordance with Gene’s wishes cremation and a private graveside service will be held in the Marissa Township Cemetery where he will be buried next to his wife.
Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in Marissa, IL is in charge of arrangements.
