Loved as a second mom. Cherished as an example of faith and spirituality that gave me a strong and lasting model of a true woman of God in my youth. I will always cherish Mrs. Wilson for her influence on my own faith In Christ Jesus. Rest well in heaven. You will be greatly missed.
Geanette Wilson
Geanette Wilson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, woman of faith, caregiver, community servant, and friend, was born on September 16, 1936, in Medon, Tennessee, to Willie Mable Anderson and Floyd Newbern. She was raised in Medon and attended Spann Rosenwald School before moving to East St. Louis, Illinois, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953 with a college scholarship. She later attended and graduated from Mildred Louise Business College on Bond Avenue in East St. Louis, Illinois.
Geanette was blessed with a happy childhood and was deeply influenced by her mother and grandmother. As a young woman, she enjoyed riding her bicycle and piecing quilts. She dreamed of becoming a nurse like her mother, a calling that reflected her lifelong desire to care for and help others.
On April 13, 1953, Geanette married her beloved husband, Henry Lee Wilson, Sr. at the courthouse in East St. Louis, Illinois. Their friend Dorothy Goode served as their witness. Geanette often spoke of the importance of being a good wife and mother, caring for one’s family, keeping a loving home, and putting God first. Henry and Geanette moved to Sparta, Illinois in 1969.
Geanette devoted her life to her family. She was married 55 years to Henry Lee Wilson, Sr. She was the proud mother of fourteen children: Marcus Lee Wilson, Sr.; Terrace Lynette Jalivay, married to Glenn Jalivay; Layla Thelan, Keena Small, Marci Wilson; Jevonda Ward; Bevey Wilson McCloud, married to Christopher McCloud; Carmen Bodle, married to Lloyd Bodle; Henry Lee Wilson, Jr., married to Dara Wilson; Juanez Deon Wilson, Sr., married to Danyel Wilson; Angela Wilson; Corey Wilson; Jaime Wilson; and Keevin Wilson, married to Amber Wilson.
She loved raising her children, teaching herself to sew, making clothes for her family, taking her children to church, and gathering everyone together for Sunday dinners. She was especially proud that all fourteen of her children grew to be loving and self-supporting. Her greatest hope was that her family would remain close and continue to care for one another, and serve the Lord.
Geanette worked as a nurses’ aide at Parkside Manor in East St. Louis, Illinois and later became a Licensed Practical Nurse at the age of 52 and worked at the Sparta Community Hospital. Nursing was the work she enjoyed most because it allowed her to help people. She also served as a Neighborhood Center Director and founded the day care center at the old Vernon School, in Sparta and was involved in community service for 20 years through IMPACK which she founded in 2005 in Sparta. Her dedication to helping others earned her numerous honors, including the Illinois Governor’s Award, the Sparta Chamber of Commerce Award, Citizen of the Year, a School District Award, and recognition as the first honorary Rotarian in Sparta.
Faith was central to Geanette’s life. She accepted Christ at the age of 24 and faithfully served in ministry for many years. She was saved under the leadership of Elder Everett Summers at Caroline Church of God in Christ in St. Louis, Missouri. She later served under Bishop Joseph Edmondson, Sr., at Church of God in Christ Jesus Christ All Nations in Sparta, Illinois, where she started YPWW, taught as a missionary, and helped establish the church’s first Vacation Bible School, which welcomed 84 children.
Geanette also served at Holiness Temple Apostolic Church in Sparta, Illinois under the leadership of Bishop Juanez D. Wilson, Sr. Her life reflected her belief that faith should be lived, not merely spoken. She encouraged her children, grandchildren, and everyone she met to put the Lord first, read and follow the Bible, and live according to God’s Word rather than simply doing whatever they wanted.
Geanette was known for her love of children, her welcoming home, her strong work ethic, and her generous heart. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, making pies and cakes, and caring for others. She did not smoke, drink, or use drugs, and she sought to live a disciplined and faithful life.
Her wisdom to her family was simple and lasting: daughters should strive to be good wives and mothers, sons should strive to be good husbands and fathers, and everyone should put God first. She wanted her children to remember her as a woman of faith who helped children, served her community, loved her family, and gave her best to those around her.
Geanette was preceded in death by her beloved husband Henry Lee Wilson, Sr., her parents, Floyd Newbern and Willie Mable Hill, her sister, Yvonne Dozier, her son-in-law, Gregory Small, Sr., grandsons, Allen Steele, Jr., and Nicholas Marteast Ward, great grandson, Jovan Jalivay II, her grandparents Will and Lela Anderson, and other beloved family members.
She leaves to cherish her memory her fourteen children, their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, her god-sister Deborah Holmes, and a host of relatives, friends, church members, and community members whose lives she touched.
Geanette Wilson’s life was a testimony of faith, service, perseverance, and love. Her legacy will live on through her family, the people she cared for, the children she helped, the churches she served, and the many lives she encouraged. Her family will honor her memory by staying close, loving one another, serving others, and keeping God first.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Holiness Temple Apostolic Church, 401 East Main Street, Sparta, IL 62286.
The Visitation will be held at Holiness Temple Apostolic Church in Sparta on Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Juanez Wilson, Sr. officiating. Committal Services will take place at Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta, IL immediately following the church services.
Heil-Schuessler & Sinn Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of arrangements

Grandma i miss you sooo much and can’t stop thinking about you. I am so honored that you requested that you wanted me to care for you. The long hours, sleepless nights and my schedule was worked around one, I would not have traded it for anything. I had the chance to be by your side when you needed me! I’ll miss your sweet voice and hearing you call me your little helper. You always had good things to say regardless how you felt. You encouraged me to go to medical school for CCMA and glad I did because it helped me to care for you. I’ll always remember the words you telling me ” I can do it” you are now resting with Jesus! Mom,
I don’t know how to put into words what it feels like to lose you. My heart is broken, and somehow the world feels different without you in it. Thank you for every hug, every sacrifice, every lesson, every prayer, and moment of love you gave me. So much of who I am is because of you. I will carry your love with me for the rest of my life. I’m going to miss your voice, especially when you call me at night while I’m at work. I love when you call me your night girl because I’m the one you can talk to when everyone else is sleeping. I will miss your smile and the tears rolling down your face with laughter when I say something to make you laugh and all the little things I never realized I would one day long for. I am happy I spent time with you these last few months and how we shared previous moments together before your passing. You meant the world to me. I will hold on to every memory, every laugh ,every story and every piece of you that lives on in me. Rest peacefully, mom. I will always love you. Until we me again. I love ❤️ you!! Your night girl/ daughter Marci.

Grandma,
As I try to make sense of the fact that you’re gone, I find comfort in the many memories and experiences I was blessed to share with you. from eating oatmeal for breakfast at your kitchen table before church, to sitting next to you during evening service, listing to and being apart of your testimonies at church, spending all day at IMPACK and helping close it down for the night, and spending summer days at camp.
I’ll always remember how you had the good candy, like Lifesavers, waiting for us when we visited. More importantly, I’ll remember watching you always put everyone else before yourself and making sure everyone was taken care of and, of course, that everyone was fed.
The impact you made and the number of lives and souls you touched are beyond measure. You’ll be greatly missed, but I find comfort knowing Grandpa is happy to have you back by his side.
I love you, Grandma, and I hope to see you again when it’s my time.
