Ethel E. (Staufenbiel) Hammel, 86, a resident at the Columbia Convalescent Center in Columbia, IL, formerly of New Athens, IL died on February 20, 2013 due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Mrs. Hammel was a homemaker and member of St. Agatha Catholic Church and the St. Agatha Council of Catholic Women in New Athens, IL

She was preceded in death by her parents; Roy and Hilda (Weideman) Staufenbiel; a brother Fred Staufenbiel; son; Michael Hammel and a grandson; Joshua James Hammel.

Surviving her are her husband, Lester E. Hammel, also residing at the Columbia Convalescent Center, whom she married on October 21, 1946 in Hecker, IL; 5 children; Peg Sher of St. Louis, MO, Tom (Linda) Hammel of Millstadt, IL, Jim (Pam) Hammel of Waterloo, IL, Tina (Jim) Brannon of Coeur d’Alene, ID and Dan (Sheri) Hammel of Waterloo, IL; 4 sisters; Beulah (Don) Blakely of Taylorville, IL, Anita Oakes of Kansas City, MO, Aurelia Hogg of Plymouth, MI and Pearl Powderly of Cape Girardeau, MO; 1 brother John (Darlene) Staufenbiel of St. Peters, MO: 9 grandchildren; Michael (Christy) Hammel, Nicole (Dave) Zanghi, Kim (Vince) Ratchford, Adam Bruno, Katie Hammel, Steven Bonney, Kevin Bonney, Jeff Duco and Jay Duco; and 7 gr. grandchildren; Brittney and Courtney Hammel, Luke Russel, Will Ratchford, Alyssa and Lauren Zanghi and Jon Duco.

Memorials may be made in the form of Mass offerings, St. Agatha School or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2013 and again on Monday, February 25, 2013 from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL. A recitation of the Rosary will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 25, 2013 at St. Agatha Catholic Church with Fr. James M. Nall officiating Burial will be at St. Agatha Catholic Cemetery in New Athens, IL.

Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.
