Mrs. Ella Lena Rosie Falkenhein, nee Sommer, 102, of rural Marissa, born December 8, 1921, in Baldwin, IL, peacefully passed away at her home on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024.  Ella was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Baldwin, IL, and St. Clair County Farm Bureau.  She was a teacher, first in a one-room schoolhouse (Pleasant Grove) and later she taught at other local schools.  She worked alongside her husband, Adolph, on their family farm and provided many wonderful meals for family and neighbors helping with the farmwork.  Ella was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she greatly valued her sisters and brothers.  Her absence will be felt deeply, though she will remain in our hearts forever.  She is now with her many loved ones in her heavenly home.

Preceding her in death were her parents – Ferdinand and Emilie (Luebkemann) Sommer, her beloved husband – Adolph Falkenhein, whom she married on October 14, 1950 in St. John Lutheran Church in Baldwin, IL, and who passed away on December 30, 2003, her son – Nolan John Falkenhein, her sisters – Goldie Bollmeier, Lena Behnken, Augusta Ohm, Mathilda Sommer, and Emilie Sommer, her brothers – Fred Sommer, Louie Sommer, Ferd Sommer, Rudolph Sommer, sister-in-law – Helen Sommer, brothers-in-law – Arkell Bollmeier, Carl Behnken, Leonard Ohm, and Joseph Braun, and her grandson – Alexander Cummings, who was also her godson.

Surviving her are her two daughters – Sandra (Richard) Cummings of Boston, MA, and Donna (Kelley) Boyd of Belleville, IL, two sisters – Leona Braun of Freeburg, IL, and Frieda Sommer of Marissa, IL, two grandchildren – George (Jessie) Cummings, Emilie Cummings, and two great-grandchildren – Braxton and Griffin Cummings. Ella is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including her godson – Robert Braun.

Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church in Baldwin, IL, or to Duke’s Helping Paw at Sparta Animal Clinic.

Visitation:  4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL, and again from 9 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church in Baldwin, IL.

Funeral:  10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church in Baldwin, IL, with Pastor Brian Nowak officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in Baldwin, IL.  Ella’s pallbearers will be Richard Cummings, Kelley Boyd, George Cummings, Shawn Behnken, Brent Sieber and Kale Hanson
