Edverda Anna Catherine “Verdie” Yesley, nee Sinn, 89, of New Athens, IL, passed away Monday, April 16, 2012 at The New Athens Home for the Aged, New Athens, IL after a lengthy illness. She was born September 6, 1922 in Darmstadt, IL. Mrs. Yesley was a homemaker and a licensed practical nurse. She was also an avid gardener, cook, needle crafter and tended the family livestock. During WW2, she worked on assembly lines for White Rogers in St. Louis, MO. After graduating from nurse’s training in 1961, she worked for the New Athens Home for the Aged, Dr. O.G. Schneidewind, MD and Dr. Sydney Trappe, MD, both of New Athens.
Edverda married Charles T. Yesley, Jr., a machinist and die-maker for Ehrhardt Tool and McDonnell Aircraft, on Christmas Day, December 25, 1941 in St. Louis. The couple moved from St. Louis to rural New Athens in 1950. She became an active member of the Marissa Home Bureau and St. John’s United Church of Christ in New Athens, where she was a member of the Women’s Guild and a past board member.
Verdie was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Sinn and Maria, nee Wagner, Sinn of Darmstadt, a brother, Wilmer Sinn, who died in infancy, two sisters, Cleota Fullerton of Marissa, and Marilyn Phelps of St. Louis and her husband of 54 years, Charles T. Yesley, Jr.
She is survived by one brother, Corvin Sinn of Marissa, two sons, Ronald C. (Janice) Yesley of Steeleville, IL, Richard E. (Nancy) Yesley of New Athens, 5 grandchildren. Michael (Laura) Yesley of Chicago, IL, Laura (David) Aspinall of Toronto, Canada, Kristina Yesley of Kent, Washington, James (Amber) Yesley of Marissa, IL Jennifer (Isaac) Orr of Sparta, IL; four great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens.
Visitation: Friends may call on Friday, April 20, 2012 from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL
Funeral: Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL with Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating. Private interment will be held at Valhalla Gardens Mausoleum in Belleville, IL
