Debra J. Leonard

Debra Jean Leonard, nee Hager, 64, of Freeburg, IL, born September 20, 1957, in Belleville, IL, passed away on Tuesday November 2, 2021, in Evansville, IN. She was the office manager for Kolditz Engineering starting in 1975 and stayed with company through mergers with Energy Consultants and then USDI for 45 years total. She also served as assistant secretary to the Gas Utilities Alliance for over 30 years. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She put her family first above all else. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy. She also enjoyed Friday Night Fish Fry Tours with her family, boating, camping, going to ballgames, travelling, history, gardening, and was the best baker.

She was preceded in death by her parents – Elmer and Lorena (Schwartz) Hager and one brother – David Hager.

Debra is survived by her husband – David W. Leonard of Freeburg, IL, two children – Ryan (Amanda) Andres of Smithton, IL, Carly (Jesse) Petri of New Athens, IL, one brother – Russell (Ruth) Hager of New Athens, IL, three nephews -Erik (Stephanie) Hager of New Athens, IL, Bryan (Lisa) Hager of New Athens, IL, Tim Hager of Arnold, MO, great nieces and nephews, and three granddaughters – Brooke Andres, Caroline Andres, and Harper Petri.

Memorials may be made to the New Athens Historical Society, American Red Cross or to the donor’s choice. Visitation: Friends and family will be gathering from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday November 5, 2021, at Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday November 6, 2021, at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL.

Funeral: Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday November 6, 2021, at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL with Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating.  Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery in New Athens, IL.

Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.
