Daniel Nuernberger

Daniel John Nuernberger, 72, of New Athens, IL; born on January 17, 1945 in Belleville, IL; passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Red Bud Regional Hospital in Red Bud, IL.

Mr. Nuernberger retired after 35 years as a supervising underwriter for SafeCo Insurance Company. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ. He was a United States Army veteran serving at Fort Amador in Panama. Dan was also a farmer. He enjoyed working with model cars and was an expert on World War II history.

He was preceded in death by his parents – Wilbur and Alice, nee Baehr, Nuernberger. His son – John Daniel Nuernberger. Father-in-law – Leroy Vielweber. Brother-in-law – John E. Main.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly fifty years – Mary Jo, nee Vielweber, Nuernberger whom he married on December 23, 1967 at St. John United Church of Christ. His daughter – Kelly (Timothy) Brandenburger of New Athens, IL. Two grandchildren – Tyler and Kaitlyn. Brother – Victor (Deb Reeves) Nuernberger. Sister – Julie Main. Mother-in-law – Dorothy (Melvin) Wagner. Sister-in-law – Judy (Jim) Newman. Brother-in-law – Jim (Phyllis) Vielweber. Godsons – Bradley Main and Barry Mehner II. Numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ, St. Louis Children’s Hospital or New Athens Home for the Aged.

Visitation: Friends may call at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL on Friday, December 15, 2017 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and on Saturday, December 16, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m..

Funeral: Services will be held at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, IL on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating.

Interment: Burial will be held at Oakridge Cemetery in New Athens, IL.

Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.

    I worked with Dan as a peer and then as a manager at Safeco back in 1988-1997. Dan was such a great guy. He was very humble and did the work of two or more underwriters. If you gave him the 8th VIN character of any 60’s or 70’s muscle car, he could tell you what engine was in it. I remember when his son died and how heartbreaking it was for the vast number of people that worked with
