Jean Schwalb Macke, 72, of Marissa, IL, born March 20, 1951 in Belleville, IL, passed away peacefully Saturday December 16, 2023, at BRIA nursing home in Columbia, IL. After graduating from Marissa Township High School in 1969, she briefly attended Belleville Area College. On July 10, 1970, she married Charles Macke at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL. Jean enjoyed traveling overseas to be with her husband who was deployed by the Air Force in the countries of Turkey and Greece. They made their way back to the states, settling back home in Marissa. Jean was a teacher’s aide in the Marissa School District for many years. Over the course of her life she was involved in many community organizations including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Home Extension, and Cursillo. She was a lifelong member of St Agatha’s Church which included being a PSR teacher. Jean’s love and devotion to her Faith radiated to a life of service and dedication to helping others.   Friendly to everyone and always with a smile, she was an invaluable inspiration to her students, siblings, children, grandchildren and a great network of friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Charles Macke, her parents John and Evelyn (Laumbattus) Schwalb, brothers David and Robert, and sister Teri Schwalb.
Surviving are her sons John Paul (Brenda) Macke,and Eric Macke. Sisters Laurie Schwalb and Mary (Troy) Snyder, brother Jim (Laura) Schwalb. Nieces and Nephews Fred (Shelly) Meister, Deana Thomas, Aaron (Katie) Macke, Elizabeth (Phillip) Hatfield, William, Dan, Luz Schwalb, Jess and Abby Snyder. Grandchildren Eden, Isaac, and Elliot Macke. Grand niece Charlie (Seth) Weymouth and Grand nephew Quinn Macke.
Memorials may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.
Visitation:  9 – 11 a.m. on Saturday December 23, 2023 at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL
Funeral Mass:  11 a.m. on Saturday December 23, 2023 at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL with Fr. Von Deeke officiating. Private interment of ashes will take place at a later date.
Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in  Marissa, IL is in charge of arrangements.

    My sympathy to the family. I remember Charles Macke, who was in the MTHS Class of 1966 and I’m sorry to see he passed away at age 54 in 2003.

  4. Jeannie was my classmate. We were in senior Girl Scouts together. Always kind, very smart and a friend to all. We lost a good one.

  2. I was very sad to learn of Jean’s passing. She was a wonderful person and always cheerful. I met her in the early to mid 1970’s. Our children were close in age, so we always had lots to talk about.
